When does an impacting drop stop bouncing?

چکیده

Non-wetting substrates allow impacting liquid drops to spread, recoil, and takeoff, provided they are not too heavy (Biance et al. 2006) or viscous (Jha 2020). In this article, using direct numerical simulations with the volume of fluid method, we investigate how stresses gravity conspire against capillarity inhibit drop rebound. Close bouncing non-bouncing transition, evidence that initial spreading stage can be decoupled from later retraction allowing understand rebound as a process converting surface energy spread into kinetic energy. Drawing an analogy coalescence induced jumping, propose criterion for transition regime, namely by condition $Oh_c + Bo_c \sim 1$, where $Oh_c$ $Bo_c$ Ohnesorge number Bond at respectively. This is in excellent agreement results. We also elucidate mechanisms inhibition limiting regimes calculating budgets relating them drop's shape internal flow.

Extreme resistance of superhydrophobic surfaces to impalement: reversible electrowetting related to the impacting/bouncing drop test.

The paper reports on the comparison of the wetting properties of superhydrophobic silicon nanowires (NWs), using drop impact impalement and electrowetting (EW) experiments. A correlation between the resistance to impalement on both EW and drop impact is shown. From the results, it is evident that when increasing the length and density of NWs (i) the thresholds for drop impact and EW irreversibi...

Airflows generated by an impacting drop.

A drop impacting a solid surface with sufficient velocity will splash and emit many small droplets. However, lowering the ambient air pressure suppresses splashing completely. This effect, robustly found for different liquid and substrate properties, raises the fundamental question of how air affects a spreading drop. In a combined experimental and numerical study we characterize the flow of ai...

Symmetry breaking in drop bouncing on curved surfaces.

The impact of liquid drops on solid surfaces is ubiquitous in nature, and of practical importance in many industrial processes. A drop hitting a flat surface retains a circular symmetry throughout the impact process. Here we show that a drop impinging on Echevaria leaves exhibits asymmetric bouncing dynamics with distinct spreading and retraction along two perpendicular directions. This is a di...

Heat exchange between a bouncing drop and a superhydrophobic substrate.

The ability to enhance or limit heat transfer between a surface and impacting drops is important in applications ranging from industrial spray cooling to the thermal regulation of animals in cold rain. When these surfaces are micro/nanotextured and hydrophobic, or superhydrophobic, an impacting drop can spread and recoil over trapped air pockets so quickly that it can completely bounce off the ...
